Main Video Game Types

A video game is basically a structured, repeatable form of play, often undertaken for fun or entertainment, and at times used as an educational instrument. Games are very different from work, which is often carried out only for remuneration, and also from fine arts, which is more typically an expressive expression of artistic or aesthetic values. Games can be simple and straightforward, or complex and intricate, requiring advanced programming or considerable amount of training.

Generally, video games fall into one of three major categories: action, adventure, or simulation. Action games are those in which the player takes a role in the storyline, completing objectives, fighting enemies, etc., while adventure games offer a linear story with significant milestones to achieve, often rewarding the player with bonuses, powers, etc. simulators are games that require the player to control a character through a third-party platform. Usually, there are few choices to make, such as the type of weapon to use, the color of clothing to wear, special moves, etc., and the player uses a variety of camera controls to accomplish these activities. All three of these genres have evolved as games have developed, incorporating new technology and different kinds of gameplay, resulting in hundreds of titles currently available.

The third major type of game, adventure games, often require players to interact with the environment by exploring it, solving puzzles, finding items, etc., as well as interacting with other characters. Unlike other genres, adventure games include a great deal of interactivity, with the result that they are highly replayable, even when playing alone. These games allow the player to escape the virtual walls of the game world and immerse themselves in a new world, with its own set of challenges and players can often return to previous levels if they wish to do so. Some of the most popular adventure games include Legend of Zelda, Secret of Solstise, Ultima series, Carmen Sandiego series, Brain Academy series, Jade series, oids series, Backgammon, Stratego series, Haze series, etc.
