Sports are organized physical activities and competitions. These fill the need for physical exercise, competition and play. All sports, be it beach volleyball, basketball, ice hockey, tennis, golf, soccer etc., are potentially competitive. This is probably the biggest difference between leisure, recreation or sports. For recreation you could have a fishing trip, hiking trip, camping trip, swimming, boating, riding a bicycle, playing a game of tennis or golf, while for sports you may be involved in weight-lifting, cycling, football, baseball etc. There are also sports which are entirely for the competitive athlete.

There is an art to sports and they are very good at what they do. This needs to be taught and learned, without which sportsmanship will deteriorate. There are plenty of chances for sports injuries. The physical training involved in most sports calls for a lot of strength and conditioning. If you aren’t fit and healthy then you can’t participate in sports.
